Everyday Fables

Lately I've been looking at fairy tales and how they have parallels in everyday life. A fairy tale shows us that despite our fears and inner struggles everything will be alright in the end. I have been trying to reveal the same messages in stories which are closer to home, in contemporary experience (some of them my own). These drawings are the prep for a large silk that I'm working on at present.

Sicily Collages

I've just got back from holiday in Sicily. Saw some amazing baroque churches, swam to my heart's content, and finally understood the fuss about Italian ice-cream. Palermo, the capital, is amazingly dilapidated. It felt like everything was covered with a layer of sun-baked grime. There was a lot of rubbish, which was very useful for collaging..

Sheridan & Co Install

Design consultants Sheridan & Co asked me to hang my silks in their window in Marylebone. They were up from June 25th - July 9th. It was great to get some West End footfall.

Artist Statement

I often get asked about my silks: how I see them and what I'm trying to convey. Here's my take on them..

I make my silks to be like contemporary artefacts, or ceremonial hangings for present day problems. I see them as falling somewhere in between being an object and a drawing.

My works are seductive like the silk on which they're made. I am interested in exploring a particular type of beauty; one where something light, burnt and seemingly flimsy attracts, and hopefully de-centres, its audience.

I always make my silks to have a specific function: whether as an alternative flag, a scarf for a loved one, or ceremonial banner. For me, they have more to share and tell when they have a sense of use.

Lastly, because my silks are so light, they move if caught by a draft or if someone walks closely by them. They shimmer; they respond to the space and the people in it. It is as if after everything that has been invested in them, they come to us to bring us news.

"Snow" by Louis MacNeice

The room was suddenly rich and the great bay-window was
Spawning snow and pink roses against it
Soundlessly collateral and incompatible:
World is suddener than we fancy it.

World is crazier and more of it than we think,
Incorrigibly plural. I peel and portion
A tangerine and spit the pips and feel
The drunkenness of things being various.

And the fire flames with a bubbling sound for world
Is more spiteful and gay than one supposes -
On the tongue on the eyes on the ears in the palms of one's hands -
There is more than glass between the snow and the huge roses.
